In Memory
Alexander "Alex" Dickson
Alexander (Alex) Dickson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, cousin, friend, and prominent member of the Calgary community, passed away on May 15, 2023, at the age of 84. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 11, 1939 he came to Canada with his Mother at the age of 7. Alex lived a full and meaningful life.
How to describe a man that meant everything to those who loved him?Wee Alec, as he was known, was a loyal, kind, and funny man of many passions. He loved to tell jokes and tease, and his sense of humour and love of anything social made him the life of the party. That instinct for performance brought Alex numerous times to Stagewest to enjoy the shows. He loved to read and play games, but super hero movies were his jam. A Storm Trooper even made an appearance at his 80th birthday party! Travelling, especially to Hawaii and Mexico, were staples in Alex's life. Never one to pass up cookies, dessert, chocolate, or candy, his sweet tooth was balanced with a "healthy" dose of Big Macs and Diet Coke. Supporting his grandkids, especially at their sporting events, brought out the best in Alex. No one cheered louder, and everyone knew when Grandpa Alex was at the rink!
In his early 20’s Alex worked with Shell for 9 years and especially loved the 3 years he got to spend working on the ocean. He then spent 25 years in the sanitation supply industry. His love of movies lead him to own 2 video stores for 8 years. Alex than took a courtesy clerk position at Sobeys at 78 years young, where he then spent 3 years chatting with all the customers. He spent his last few years working as a courtesy driver for Mazda.
He was an active member of the Lion’s Club, Gyro, Canadian Sanitation Supply Association, and the Liffey Players, a theatre group, where Wee Alec got to flex his acting chops.
Alex is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Lynda, and his children Angela Batchelor (Keith), Jillian Dickson, Karen Gilmour, Greg Gilmour, Jeff Gilmour, Brad Gilmour (Jamie) and Scott Gilmour (Jenna). He was also adored by his grandchildren Christina O’Brien (Kevin), Brittany Gilmour (Nigel Krentz), Zack and Brody Batchelor, and Ryder and Jacob Gilmour. Additionally, he will be missed by his cousin Carl Hassell and niece Andrea Dare (Jeff), as well as many more family members, friends, and co-workers.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Tom Baker cancer centre, Dr.Rabie, Home Care, and the Southwood Hospice for the care he received.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 27th, 2023, 1-4pm . Those who knew Alex are invited to attend and share their memories of this wonderful man. Alex will be deeply missed but his legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
