Alice Greening

Today we remember and honor Alice Helena Greening who was taken up to meet Jesus on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the Dulcina Hospice in Calgary, Alberta. She fell asleep peacefully in the later afternoon at the age of 86. She was accompanied by her husband Edwin who had just prayed that she should receive a resounding welcome celebration upon her arrival in heaven. Alice loved her room and her great view at the hospice during her stay since January 13 and often expressed her thankfulness for the great loving care in the spacious room and for the beautiful view outside where she could watch the birds and rabbits through the big window.

Alice was the daughter of John and Betty Loewen of New Bothwell, Manitoba, and lived near the Bothwell Cheese Factory. She was born on June 24, 1939 and predeceased by her parents and one younger brother Walter. She still has a younger sister Grace who lives in Ontario and a younger brother Edwin who lives in Manitoba with his wife Ellie. She raised four boys, Barry, Bruce, Brent, and Tim, and later a granddaughter Jessica, Brent’s daughter. She still has eight grandchildren, if we count in Jessica and her step sister Shayna.

Alice went to public school at her little town and took one year Bible School at the Steinbach Bible Institute in 1956. She worked at her parent’s service station at quite a young age and later looked after a polio patient in Winnipeg. After getting married to Edwin Greening on July 12, 1959, she helped with typing and she practiced her cooking skills. Her first batch of buns didn’t rise properly and turned out rock hard, so she did what any new wife would do, she cried. So she needed the satisfaction of feeding the squirrels and the birds in the nearby bush.

After moving to Calgary, Alberta, in 1977, she ran a Day Care at home for 10 years and worked at either Hallmark Cards or Carlton Cards depending on her schedule. Perhaps her most effective work after that was volunteering at the Centre Street Church library and volunteering at Samaritan’s Purse. She worked in the area of the Shoe Box Ministry and mailing out literature.

Alice had a strong faith in Christ and attended church since childhood and attended Brentview Baptist Church and later Centre Street Church in Calgary. She was not able to attend church after becoming more sensitive to the scent and perfume problems, so instead watched online services along with friends whenever they could come for family style worship.

Alice had many great qualities and so we must remember some of, for example, she always responded to people who faced her with a big sincere smile. Why? Because she would return a big smile, and she had a beautiful smile as everyone will remember well. Another quality was her loyal sense of duty and responsibility. Whatever she did, whether at home or away, the work that needed to be done was done well. Evidence of that is at the Billy Graham Samaritan’s Purse warehouse in Calgary where they named a forklift “Alice” to honor her hard work there. Her name was put on the forklift.

Alice’s frail body will be laid to rest at the Crossfield Cemetery, beside number two highway, east of Crossfield. Why there, because she loved the open country where she would often talk to deer and other wild animals from inside the car while stopping near the side of the road. It was Alice’s request to be laid to rest there when the time comes.
