In Memory

August "Gus" Le Strat

May 11th, 1941 - July 30th, 2025
August "Gus" Le Strat

If you ever crossed paths with Gus LeStrat, chances are he made you laugh, beat you at cribbage, or tried to sell you a set of crib pegs.

Gus was born in Eriksdale, Manitoba, to Violet and Mike LeStat. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Ray; and his longtime partner, Nellie Brunton. Gus is lovingly remembered by his brothers, Doug and Robert.

Gus had a passion for travel and managed to make his way around the world. A proud and tireless worker, he spent years traveling across Canada and the U.S., working on powerlines, building substations, and doing carpentry. He was a champion cribbage player and spent over 40 years as a baseball umpire. He loved sports, competition, and winning.

Creativity flowed through him. He spent many years crafting and selling his work at farmers markets, with his custom crib pegs becoming fan favorites but above all, Gus was a people person. He never met a stranger, only future friends. His quick wit, loud voice, and big heart made him unforgettable. He was one of a kind. A friend to many. And he will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, Gus requested that donations be made to the Salvation Army in his memory because even in passing, he wanted to help others.

Gus (and Nellie) were friends of my parents in Calgary. My parents and I have known Gus for almost 30 yrs. When I moved to Drumheller in 2021 I got back in touch with Gus. My father passed last Dec 28, 2024 and Gus spent many hours on the phone with my mom to help support her through her loss. Gus is one of those persons that will always be remembered with a smile. 💕

Gus indeed challenged me to many games of crib and sold me several sets of pegs along the way! He had a big voice and a kind heart. I met him and Nellie when I bought a trailer in the Greenwood Villas and soon got to know Gus. It is with a sad heart that I say goodbye to one of the good guys! Rest easy, my friend.
