Barry Koenig

Family and Friends, it is with a heavy broken heart that I let you know that Barry has put his life in the review mirror. Barry passed away suddenly on Monday, January 22, 2024 after spending the day being...well Barry.  He is lovingly remembered by his partner, Cathy; his father, John; sister, Denise (Sandy) Harris; niece and nephew, Jessie and Morgan Harris. He was predeceased by his mother Mary Anne and brother Christopher.

He had been working nights over the past week. I saw him Monday morning before work and again that night as we crossed paths in the garage, where he kissed me goodbye and jokingly said "I will meet you in this exact spot in 12 hrs".

Barry was working on site with a couple of guys (probably chatting more than working), then proceeded to check something on the truck. A co-worker return moments later to find Barry in medical distress. They tried to resuscitate him, but unfortunately, he passed away.

Barry is now on that never-ending motorcycle ride with clear sky's, plenty of open roads (maybe, even on or two that he has not travelled), no speed limits and evenings filled with BBQ's paired with a good glass of wine or a Gibsons & coke and campfires to sit around.

He is with his mom and brother (Christopher), and in true Barry fashion, you just know he will be watching down on us all until one day we will see him again.

There will be a Memorial/Celebration of Life in the near future and I will post once I have more details.

Please post your favorite stories and pictures of Barry.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Barry's name to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation with funds being directed to the NICU, which has been a part of the Big Hearts Charity Ride for the past several years:

We lived across the street from Mr. Barry for a short time. He was larger than life for all the little kids on the block. They would be playing in the yard and want to run across the street, always yelling "Mr. Barry!!" to get his attention, in true fashion he would tell them to not come across the street but he would change and then be over to sit and put his feet in the kiddie pool, more times than not he was the biggest kid of the bunch. When the kids had an issue, it was over to Mr. Barrys to fix a slide, oil a bike chain or just to visit. As a friend, he was fun, honest, upstanding and a gentle man as well as a gentleman. I mean who has an old motorcycle in their home? This is a sad loss for many. He was a lovely soul who went above and beyond for many especially the littles. Rest easy friend

So sad to learn of Barry passing away.
I met Barry/Bear at my first motorcycle rally while wandering around with a heavy head.
He was the only other person awake & happily lent me a cigarette & made me a coffee.
I would learn over the year's that Barry always had the coffee on at his tent.
Our group carried on to another rally with Barry & we shared many more years & memories at Horsethief and so many other shenanigans.
I know Barry had a warm welcome waiting for him.

I have known Barry for probably 25 to 30 years we work together at Nowsco and then BJ the one time we where down in Drumheller on the frac-crew and we stop in to get fuel one day with the pumpers and Barry seen that one of his driver tires where low so being Barry he started to fill up the tire and the big boots that where on the tandem tandem pumps the stem where inside the rim of the tire not on the out side so Berry went over top of the tire being skinny and as tall as he was so by the time he got it aired up he was stuck in there because as the tire was aired up it expanded and got him stuck there and that’s where Barry got the name inflatable man he was a great guy and will be missed

We didn't know Barry very much as he appeared to be a very quiet and reserved man in a crowd; that is how we usually met Barry in a crowd of motorcyclists. Barry loved motorcycling and loved his friends he made along the way. We do remember as always having a heart warm welcome to us and a huge smile on his face, need we say where he would have just come from. You will forever be in our memories Barry and we will pray for your family who surely will be missing you.
