On February 5, 2026, in Calgary, at the age of 94, Christa Else Schalm (nee Veit), our dear Mom, Oma and great-Oma, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour.
Christa was born on November 21, 1931, in Hermannsdorf, Germany. She married Gottfried Schalm on December 21, 1956, in Nigeria. Together with Gottfried, she served as a missionary in Nigeria with SIM for 27 years between 1956 to 1993. She also served with International Student Ministries Canada in both Winnipeg and Calgary.
Christa was predeceased by Gottfried, her loving husband of 66 years; her parents, Wilhelm and Martha; and her brother, Gerhard. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Dorothea Schalm, Annegret (Bob) Horton, Michael (Margret) Schalm, Christina (Mitch) Peters, Markus (Teresa) Schalm; her grandchildren, Ryan (Nicole) Schalm with Antony, Steven (Emily Chin) Peters, Micaela (Jeremy) Epp with Kaiden and Lucas, Danielle (Steve) Selinger with Hailey, Kirsten (Kun Devanny) Horton with Kai and Aike, Stephanie Schalm, Niklaas (Kate) Schalm with Sylvie and Emeric, Marie Horton, Matthew Schalm, Emily (Kyle) Friesen and Michael Peters. The family sincerely thanks Dr. Anna Tomanek, Dr. Mark Evans, and Dana Weder, along with the staff at Evanston Grand Village, who were there to take such good care of Christa in the last years of her life.

Christa greatly loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was selfless, with an unassuming nature that was full of sincerity and humility. Her life was marked first and foremost by her deep commitment and obedience to Jesus Christ. After her salvation, her all-important mission in life was to serve God by serving others. Christa trusted God for provision and protection, she submitted to His leading, and she was willing to serve Him. God used her gifts and abilities, regardless of where she was living, to further His kingdom.
“Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matthew 25:23
