Cynthia Louise Smith

Cindie Smith passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at the age of 71. She will be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Knute (Karen) Smith and Eric (Heather) Smith; her children, Brita (Rod) Mackay, Matthew Kelm, and Annalise (Sean) Smith; her grandson, Alexander Kelm and his mother, Stacie; as well as the many friends and colleagues she made throughout her life. She was predeceased by her mother, Bertha Josephine Smith and her father, Archie Joseph Smith.

Born in Yonkers, New York, Cindie has lived in LA, Saskatoon, Delia, and—for the last 30 years—Airdrie where she worked as a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist with the Gimbel Eye Center until her retirement in 2021. Cindie was a people person who could start a conversation with anyone, whether it be at yoga class or the Sweet Joan plant shop, where she volunteered to keep busy in retirement. Cindie was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Master and was self-proclaimed 101% Norweigan. She will be remembered for her kindness, her dedication to her friends, and for the positivity and strength she showed in the face of adversity.

We would like to thank Dr. Tang and the staff at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Center; Marley Oliveira with Alberta Home-Care; Concierge Care Calgary; and everyone at Dulcina Hospice for the excellent care, compassion, and guidance through difficult times.

Cindie’s fashion sense was colourful and bold which is why we will be encouraging folks to dress as colourfully as possible at her Celebration of Life at the Lutheran Church of the Master in Airdrie, AB on Thursday, February 20th at 1:30 pm.

Cindie was a cherished member of Gimbel, joining the team in 1988. She worked as an Ophthalmic Technician and took great pride in her COMT designation. Cindie was known for her unwavering dedication and reliability, but above all, she was deeply loved for her warm, compassionate approach to patient care. Her kindness and professionalism left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working with her.

It was an honor of working with her. Our deepest condolences to her family.
