Born in Saskatoon, SK
Passed in Sundre, AB
Debra Flegel

It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, Debra Lynne Flegel. A true cowgirl, whose spirit could never be fenced in.

Born in Saskatoon, SK to Dan and Ronnie Meyers, Mom grew up in a tight-knit family of four, with summers spent at the family cabin on Jeanette Lake. In 1971, the family traded city life for an acreage south of Saskatoon and a new chapter devoted to horses, one that would shape the rest of her life. By 12 she had her own horse, and as a teenager she rode with the Cory Cavaliers 4-H Club and Saskatchewan Pony Club. An accomplished rider, she took first place at the 1976 Saskatoon Light-Horse Show 6-Bar competition aboard her horse Country Squire ("Gomer"), and went on to compete as a team member at the 1979 Western Canada Summer Games and the 1980 Saskatchewan Summer Games.

Mom earned her Bachelor of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, where she met Dave. They married on August 9, 1979, and welcomed their son Mitchel, followed by their daughter Kristen. In 1989 she moved with the kids to Fruitvale, BC, where she taught at JL Crowe Secondary School in Trail. She taught as she rode: with patience, honesty, and the expectation that you could do more than you thought.

Once Mitch and Kristen were off to university, Mom returned to Saskatchewan and brought Hidden Meadows Ranch to life, teaching young riders with patience and grit, and passing down not just skills but confidence and respect for the horse.

In 2021 she made her final move to be closer to her grandkids, finding her oasis along the Red Deer River in Sundre, AB. "The Farm" became a little pocket of peace where family, neighbors, and friends gathered, and where she took pride in raising grandchildren alongside farm life.

Becoming a grandmother was her greatest joy. First to Tyson and Jacob, and later welcoming Kalen and Kase. She taught those boys to ride, to stand tall, to speak honestly, and to hold tight to the people and values that matter most. Whether they were scoring goals or saving them, slinging mud by the river, taxiing pups around in the gator, or helping with chores, she radiated love.

She showed us all that life isn't about playing it safe. It's about showing up, loving hard, and leaving nothing unsaid. She will be remembered for her wild spirit, her soft heart, and her love of life and horses.

Mom is lovingly remembered by her son Mitchel (Kara) and grandsons Tyson, Jacob, (Kalen and Kase); her daughter Kristen (Jeremy); her sister Shirley (Jay), and nieces Stephanie (Cory), and son Gus, and Jennifer (Coleman); and her mother Ronnie. She was predeceased by her father Dan in 2002.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom's honor may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The family invites you to a Memorial Service in loving memory, held at Bergen Community Hall on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Following the service, please join us for a Last Ride tribute and celebration of life at the hall.

Deb made my dream of riding horses come true. She taught me from ages 9 to 18, and gave me the foundation to be the horsewoman I am today. She was an amazing teacher and friend. I remember just riding in the arena side by side chatting about life. My deepest condolences to her family ❤️

I took riding lessons from your mom when I was little. I just learned recently that she lived in Alberta and was still into the horse scene. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She will be remembered fondly!
