Don "Mr.T" Thompson

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Donald Arthur Thompson announce his passing. Don passed away peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the Claresholm General Hospital, at the age of 75.

Born August 31, 1948 in Claresholm, Alberta Don was the eldest of five children born to Arthur and Patricia Thompson.

Don met and married his wife Wendy in Claresholm in 1971. Later on Don got great joy from being an uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by parents, Arther and Patricia Thompson; and brother, Bruce.

He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Peggy White (Jim); nephews, Craig and Scott; brothers, John Thompson (Shelley), Roger Thompson, David Thomson (Naomi);  sister-in-law, Shelley Dixon (Murray); and niece, Jenn; along with many more extended family including aunts, nieces and nephews.

Don attended the University of Calgary, graduating in 1970, with a Bachelor in Education. After teaching for one year in Fort Macleod, Don spent the remainder of his 35 year teaching career, teaching in Claresholm at the Willow Creek Composite High School fondly remembered by many students as “Mr. T”.  As a Montreal Canadians fan, Don allowed students to get bonus marks on tests for knowing which NHL team was the best. Early in his teaching career, Don coached many different sports, but will be remembered best for teaching social studies. Ending his career, Don spent a year as a School Board Trustee for Livingstone Range School Division.

When Don wasn’t at the school or grading assignments he enjoyed spending time woodworking. His talent in woodworking exemplified by the house he built and lived in for about 40 years. Don also had a black belt in taekwondo, which he earned along side his sister Peggy. Don enjoyed travelling many miles on his motorcycle.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jones and the staff at the Claresholm General Hospital for the excellent care, as well as the kindness and compassion they showed Don and his family.

In leu of flowers, donations can be made in Don’s name to Claresholm and District Health Foundation, Box 2938, Claresholm, Alberta https://cdhealth.ca/

Following Don’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.

Thinking of Mr.Thompson’s family at this time. Mr. T shaped the trajectory of my life. I chose to study history in University as a direct result of having him as a teacher. He was one of a kind. I’ll never forget him.

Mr. T was one of my favorite teachers. He instilled in me a desire to learn, to think critically, and question things. He was always kind and had a great sense of humor. I always thought he would make a great Santa Claus when he was older. I wonder if he ever was. Condolences to the family on the loss of a great person.

He was absolutely one of the most important men in making me who I am. I devoured everything he taught us and made it central to my career. Thank for the gift of understanding, humour and wisdom. Sincerest condolences to his family and to the thousands of students who were lucky enough to sit in a desk in his classroom.

Mr. Thompson was a favourite teacher and is fondly remembered many years later. He was an inspiration for many of us who went into education as a career and the model of what a teacher should aspire to be. His classes were interesting, entertaining, and prepared us well, plus he made everyone in the class feel important. The story about bonus points for answering that Montreal Canadiens were the best team is absolutely true! My condolences to his family. He left a very positive mark on many people.

My sincere condolences to the family. He left a lasting impression on so many, a wicked sense of humour, could see through a teenagers BS and treated his students with respect. He was the reason that social studies was nearly everyone’s favourite class. Always remembered fondly.

So sorry to hear this news 😢 He will always be the best teacher I ever had! I may have skipped a lot of classes but I never skipped any of his! To think he wasn’t all that much older than we were when he started teaching at the Composite. I will forever have fond memories of my favourite teacher, Mr. Thompson! Mr. T was my social studies teacher, as well as experimental psych and philosophy of man....was always encouraging, kind yet firm, and cared about each student he ever taught. 10yrs after I graduated, my nephew Bobby attended the high-school and was fortunate to have Mr. T for his teacher. Mr. T would tease him about his wheelchair being a Chevy instead of a Dodge(which Mr. T drove).
Mr. T was and always will be the best teacher WCCHS will ever have. Will certainly miss you sir....my condolences to his family and friends.

Don will be remembered for his kindness and great sense of humor. His smile and laughter, could light up any room. As a teacher, he was committed to making sure we were well prepared academically. He also encouraged each of us to be a better person, contribute to society and to question what we did not understand. He made a difference in the lives of his students, and all who came to know him.
I feel lucky that I knew him both as “Mr. T” and as “Don”. He always had a joke and carried on many conversations about world events. It is no surprise that social studies remained a passion.
Don always expressed more concern for others than he did for himself. He will be greatly missed.
My sincere condolences go out to Wendy and his family. ❤️

Mr. T was one of my favorite teachers. He could get a debate going in no time in class, and sit back and watch it happen. You never knew what side he was on, but created many a great conversation in class. He always had an amazing smile and sense of humor. RIP
