Duncan Alexander Chute

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved Duncan Alexander Chute. Duncan taught all of us about kindness, acceptance and unconditional love. He was one of God’s greatest masterpieces!

Duncan lost his battle with cancer on Monday, July 31, 2023 at the age of 66 years.

Duncan was born April 28, 1957 in Edmonton, AB to Donald John Chute and Catherine (Kay) nee MacRae. In 1960 the Chute Family moved from Edmonton to Calgary where Duncan resided until his death.

He worked for over 25 years for Calgary Interfaith Thrift Stores where his mother Kay was the Managing Director and was instrumental in setting up the Calgary stores. Duncan worked there until the stores closed in 2007. For most of his life (over 45 years) he was part of the Calgary L’Arche community and lived in the Annapurna home before he was hospitalized and went into hospice care. He loved his community and they loved and supported him back up until the time of his passing.

Duncan is survived by his oldest and dearest friend Basil Owen of Calgary, AB, brother Michael Chute & Patricia Brosseau of Summerland, BC, sister Linda & Bob Bolack of London, Ont, brother Don & Donna Chute of Calgary, AB and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins.

He is predeceased by his father Donald Chute, mother Catherine Chute, sister Patty Lockhart, nephew Alex Chute as well as aunts Teresa, Margo, Dorothy, and Cecile, uncles Joe, Leo, Vic, Bill, Jack and cousins Teresa, Kathy, Janine.

Many thanks to the staff of Calgary L’Arche Community who made Duncan feel safe and loved in his final days and showered him with love and friendship always.

Go rest high on that mountain Duncan.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 5340 4 Street SW, Calgary, AB, on Friday, August 4, 2023 at 11 am with a reception lunch to follow.

Duncan grew up on Westglen Crescent. It was a microcommunity in the days where all the kids walked to school together, played Street hockey and looked after each other. Duncan was soft spoken, shy and loving. Duncan had a lovely singing voice and we remember at Patti's wedding he sang Eidlweis and there was not a dry eye in the house. Duncan you are now singing with the angels. Rest in peace.

“What a breath of fresh air” comes to my mind in thinking of Duncan. He was always ready to greet me warmly, whenever I saw him. He will be missed by so many. Condolences to Duncan’s family and many friends. He was a remarkable man.

Duncan was one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met. When you were Duncan’s friend or family there was no pretence, he wasn’t fake or mean he just didn’t have that in him. He was loving and cared a lot more about things then people thought. I didn’t see him often but when I did there was always a smile and a hug. With sadness we will help send you home Duncan , I will miss you but am happy you are safe in Gods arms now.
