In Memory
George Chin
George
Edward Chin passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the age of
94. George was married to Coral (Kong) for 65 years. They have 4 daughters:
Sharine (Dave), Leanne (Andrew), Corina (Art), and Lisa (Randy), and have 8
grandchildren: Jason, Justin, Sarah, Caitlyn, Evan, Kristin Joy, Niah, and
Kira.
George
was the 7th son of the 7th son in a family of 14 children and was predeceased
by his parents, Charles and Rose Chin; and his siblings, Jim (Nancy), Sam,
Harry, Frank (Sandy), William (Mary), Albert, Gladys, Margaret (Douglas), and
Charles (Rose). He is lovingly remembered by Mary (George), Morley (Gladys),
Jack (Jessie), Alan (Anne), and numerous nieces and nephews.
George
was born in Lucknow on July 28th, 1929. He and his two brothers, Bill and Abe,
were the famous hockey “Chin Line” in southern Ontario, that enjoyed much
success in amateur hockey. When George was 15, he and his brothers were invited
to the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp. He was granted a hockey scholarship
at the University of Michigan, where he obtained his degree in geology. He was
given the honor of being selected an NCAA All American for two years, and his
team won the NCAA Hockey Championships in both those years. He was inducted
into the U of M Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
George
moved west to work as a geologist and met Coral. They raised their family in
Calgary. For George, family was his priority and consequently, he was
adored by all his children and grandchildren. They admired his friendliness,
hard work, humour, discipline, servant-heartedness and generosity.
George’s
interests included fitness, (he was jogging decades before it was commonplace
and worked out the day before he passed away) ballroom dancing, golfing,
skating, gardening, traveling to dozens of countries with Coral, and watching
sports.
One
of George’s favourite verses was 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I
have finished the race and I have kept the faith.”
A
Celebration of Life will be held in the new year.

We are so sorry to learn of dear George's passing. He was a dear friend to both our parents, in particular to our Dad Oon Sian. I remember how our Dad would tell George on the phone long distance (no Whatsapp in those days) "You are so good! You are so good!" whenever George did a favour for us or helped He-Leng with some chores eg. shovelling the driveway after a heavy snow storm etc. Our Dad would keep a set of golf clubs in Calgary over those years in the 1980s and 1990s, always ready to have a game with George. Needless to say, the highpoint of our father's trips to Calgary other than seeing his daughter He-Leng and granddaughters Marissa and Jessica, was to spend time with George again. Why did Oon Sian take so fondly and warmly to George? Our observation is simply this - George's warm, open, approachable, helpful, sporting, outgoing, gregarious nature won the hearts and touched all those who had the privilege and joy of coming to know him, including our Dad and we ourselves.
We join you in mourning the loss of dear George and we shall always cherish the wonderful memories that we have of when George was there for us. We pray that God himself will comfort you and come by you at this time of your loss.
With deepest condolences
