In Memory
Herbert Karl Sulek

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Herbert Karl Sulek, aged 86, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. Born on May 4, 1939, in Strahl, Czechoslovakia, Herb's journey through life was as colorful and vibrant as the music he loved.
Herb was an only child who faced the trials of war at a young age. His village fell under German occupation, and he spent part of his childhood in Russian army camps, enduring hardships that would shape his resilient spirit. After the war, the family settled in Frankfurt, Germany, where Herb discovered his passion for music. He played in various bands across Europe, creating memories and friendships that he cherished for a lifetime.
In search of new opportunities, Herb immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, with his band leader, Guy Fox. There, he found work at Stanley Drugs, but his true calling remained in music. Herb married and welcomed two sons, Darren and Stephan, into the world, who brought him immeasurable joy.
In 1982, Herb made the move to Calgary, where he took on the role of hotel manager at the Sandman in downtown Calgary. It was here that he met the love of his life, Margret, whom he married in 1988. Their time together was filled with laughter and love, with Herb often saying that those years were the best of his life. Margret's passing in January 2008 left a void in his heart, but the memories they created together continue to bring warmth to those who knew them.
Herb was not just a husband and father; he was a beloved stepfather to Jolanda and Brenda, and a proud grandfather to his seven grandchildren: Kevin, Heather, Krystal, Nick, Becky, Jordan, and Madison. His family was his pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Herb’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and the power of music. He leaves behind a legacy of stories, laughter, and melodies that will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. As we say goodbye, let us remember the man who turned hardships into harmonies and filled our lives with joy.
A Celebration of Herb's Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Herb's memory. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
