Iris Short

Iris Short passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, embraced by the love of her family. Today we said goodbye to the biggest pillar of our family. Although it is incredibly sad, there is comfort in knowing Iris no longer has to live one more day without her husband Allen. Mom was an outstanding mother, guide, and mentor to her grandchildren. She loved to host her family for many suppers and nobody will ever make a Mac and Cheese like Iris. She would always smile when the grandchildren would burst through her door, and headed straight to the fridge for a goodie or three. Iris made sure everyone was happy and full before anyone left. Moms kind heart and cheerful attitude lead to an open door for friends to stop by, hosting many happy hours, and a few glasses of their homemade wine. Together with her husband Allen, they built a well known business A. L. Short Trucking in Calgary. They built an incredible life for their family.  Eventually, they settled into the Community of Woodside in Airdrie, AB, building one of the first houses on the golf course. They spent beautiful days together on the golf course enjoying her favourite pastime. If you look closely at the plaques at Woodside Golf you will find Iris’ name. Iris was a member of the Golf Course for over 35 years. She was Senior Champion at the Course 4 times, the last being in 2007 at the age of 79. She won the Marg Ward Championship in 2005, sailing away to a 6 stroke win. Mom and Dad spent winters in Arizona, and travelled to many hot destinations.  Iris and Allen were married 70 years in September, 2022. So 70 plus years of Christmases together, there was no way she was going to spend her first Christmas without the love of her life. Iris will certainly be missed by family and friends, and lots of tears shed, but she is home with Allen, and that matters even more. Iris is lovingly remembered by daughter, Alanna (Rick) McRae; son, Lane (Dawn) Short; grandchildren, Jordan (Jennifer) Fletcher, Amy (Doug) Fletcher, Sarah (Braden) Grover, Aaron (Krista) Fletcher, Carly (Rhys) Short, Tawny Short; sister, Doris Creighton; sister in law, Margie Lindeman, and many special nieces and nephews. Iris was predeceased by her Mom and Dad, Ed and Emma Lindeman; brothers, Mel and Clarence Lindeman; son in law, Grant Fletcher; brother in law, Jamie Creighton. Iris has 11 great grandchildren who captured her heart and completed her family. Iris truly was the pillar to our family, and we are incredibly lucky to have had her in our lives for so many years. Mom leaves an emptiness in our hearts, but what a legacy she leaves behind. We thank Didsbury Long Term Care for the care and kindness towards Mom, in the short time she stayed there. There will be a private family Inurnment at the Airdrie Cemetery on December 11.

I am sending much love and sympathy to all of you. What a beautiful soul my cousin Iris was. Although we couldn't see each other often, we kept in touch. I feel a part of my heart is missing. I loved her so much. I will miss her❤️. Sim and I enjoyed a game of golf with Iris and Allen any time we were together. Many good memories.
