Jack "John" Lukey

Jack (John William) Lukey passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, just one month shy of his 100th birthday. He was a long-time resident of Sherwood Park, Alberta.
Born November 16, 1926 in Humbolt, Saskatchewan, to parents Edna and Joel Lukey, Jack was predeceased by his wife Barbara (MacKenzie) and two sisters, Olive and Joelene. Jack graduated from the College of Engineering at the University of
Saskatchewan in 1949, obtained his P.Eng., and worked as a Civil Engineer in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. He was proud to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces and retired with the rank of Major.
Jack married Barbara in Saskatoon in 1953. They raised five children, Bruce, Ann, Donald, Claire and Elaine; he was a proud grandfather, Lauren, Katy, Adam, Caroline, Mackenzie, Riley, Haley and Jaden; and a great grandfather, to Jasper.
Jack and Barbara enjoyed curling, music, bridge and cribbage, and their joy came from raising their children and encouraging their various interests and activities. After the family moved to Sherwood Park in 1972, Jack and Barbara became involved in growing and promoting the sport of ringette, serving on local and provincial committees for years.
They were both Honorary Members of the Alberta Ringette Association. Jack was a founding member of Ringette Alberta and was on the executive for 10 years, including the role of President. Even back in high school, Jack enjoyed swimming and skiing, and stayed active in many sports all his life. He became a ringette referee, instructor of referees and held the position of Referee in Chief for Sherwood Park Ringette Association for a year. Jack refereed his 1000th game on his 60th birthday, and in 2014, at 88 years of age, was the second oldest member at the Sherwood Park curling club, actively throwing rocks from the hack. He was honored as a Builder in 2000 for the County of Strathcona Millennium Place Sports Wall of Recognition, and in 2010, he received the Pride of Strathcona Award for Contributions to the Community.
Jack will be remembered for his community spirit and support, his pride in being a Canadian, his participation in the annual Terry Fox run, and his membership with the St. Thomas Anglican Church in Sherwood Park. He enjoyed seniors' skating, swimming, square dancing, ushering at church, caretaking the cemetery, hunting, gardening, nature, exploring for minerals in northern Ontario, and was always ready to lend a helping hand including volunteering at Canada Day celebrations, and Winter and Summer Games. Jack will be greatly missed by all who enjoyed his friendly, welcoming nature and his quick-witted comments.
Jack’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Chartwell Eau Claire in Calgary as well as the wonderful medical team at Rockyview General Hospital ER and Geriatric Ward.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Terry Fox Foundation (terryfox.org)

It was interesting to see his 5 kids grow up and find their own areas of interest. A very nice family.
