Janet (Jan) Elizabeth Fish (nee Thomas)

Janet (Jan) Elizabeth Fish, 80, of Airdrie, Alberta, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 18, 2025 in Calgary, Alberta at the Peter Lougheed Centre. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on September 13, 1945, to Archibald (Archie) and Isabella Thomas (née Jackson), Jan carried with her a deep love for stories of Canada—tales from her father when he and his brother, George, journeyed across the Atlantic during World War I.
Jan’s sense of adventure sent her travelling west to Vancouver BC, to see the beloved Rocky Mountains she had heard about and needed to see for herself. The Rockies became one of her most favorite places to visit where she enjoyed camping, hiking, cross-country skiing and staying at cabins. In 1968, Jan met the love of her life, Gordon Alfred Fish, at a friends' house when she was in Vancouver visiting a friend. They dated for a few months and married that same year in Vancouver, BC. In 1970, Gord and Jan returned to Calgary, and after nearly seven years of hoping, they welcomed their daughters—Tara Jan in 1975 and Heather Marie in 1976.
Jan devoted herself to raising her girls, creating a warm and loving home. Once they were in school, she pursued her own education, earning her credentials as a Geophysical Technician from SAIT. She built a respected career in Calgary’s oil and gas industry, known for her expertise and her generous spirit in sharing knowledge.
Jan’s life was rich with friendships, laughter, and adventure. She cherished her time with Gord’s Calgary Highlander community, camping at “the lot,” and traveling to British Columbia, Mexico, and Hawaii. After retiring in 2007, Jan and Gord moved to Airdrie, where the Airdrie Legion became a beloved part of their lives. Jan was a familiar face, a loyal friend, and a source of warmth to all who knew her.
Jan was predeceased by her father, Archie, her mother, Isabella, her brother, David, and nephew, Stewart. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Gordon, her daughters, Tara and Heather and their families, her sister Isabel and brother-in-law Peter Sawyer, neice Dawn Thomas-Benjamin and nephew Gavin Cummings and their families. Her legacy lives on in the memories she created, the love she gave, and the lives she touched.
She will be deeply missed.
Please join Gord and family at Jan's Celebration of Life at the Royal Canadian Legion 288 Branch - Airdrie, Alberta on Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 12pm - 4pm.
