We are deeply honoured that John and his family have requested that memorial tributes be made in support of Inn from the Cold and the Alzheimer's Society of Canada in lieu of flowers.
This thoughtful gesture is a powerful reflection of John's compassion and care for the community. We are grateful for his legacy of generosity, which will continue to bring shelter, dignity, and hope to children and their families.
Please accept our sincerest condolences for this immense loss.

Our condolences go out to the families and friends of Uncle Johan (John). He is at peace now but will remain in our thoughts and memories of his memorable long life. I always liked Uncle John for his for his kindness, work ethic, opinions, adventures, and appreciation for life. I can't help but go back to the decision for the family to immigrate to Canada. With his adventurous spirit and seeking a better life for him and the rest of the family, Uncle John was chosen to move to Canada first, in 1952, to get a sense of what life is like in Canada. With his optimistic view, the rest of the family moved to Canada in the Calgary area in 1953 via ocean liner and train (a very long trip). The rest of the family included included his mother, Berendina (Opoe), his brothers, Karst (Karl) and Fenna as well (as myself, Jan (John) who was 9 months old), Alex, Nico (Nick), and Bernard (Bernie). I find this an adventure of a lifetime which will never be forgotten. All were interested in farming which most of them started at some point. They also had a great work ethic. Also, all my uncles were married in Canada and raised families which rapidly grew from generation to generation.
Uncle John will never be forgotten and was an integral part of this whole adventure. He will always be remembered for being such an optimistic person. May he live in peace now.
