John “Jack” Jeffs McMullen
September 29, 1938 to February 20, 2026
John Jeffs McMullen, known to many as Jack and to his close family as JJ, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026 in Calgary at the age of 87.
Born on September 29, 1938 in Medicine Hat, Jack spent his early years there before pursuing post secondary studies in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, where he graduated in 1962 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later furthered his education at Queen’s University in 1968.
Jack built a respected career as a Telecommunications Engineer, a profession that took him across Canada and the United States, as well as abroad to Chile, Tanzania, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, and Poland. He valued the opportunity to see different parts of the world and the people he met along the way.
He was also a devoted member of his community and gave generously of his time through many years of volunteer service in Cambrian Heights. In recognition of his dedication, he received numerous awards, including the Calgary Community Advocate Award in 2007. His service reflected his quiet commitment to making a difference where he could.
Jack found enjoyment in curling, jogging, fishing, birding, travelling, and reading. He had a deep love for his dogs, who were faithful companions throughout his life. He was a steady and thoughtful presence, living a life marked by integrity, curiosity, and devotion to his family.
He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Robert McMullen, and by his siblings Eileen, Bobby, Marian, David, and Bert.
Jack is lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 65 years, Lorna McMullen; his children David (Jane) and Mary Lynne (Mark); his grandchildren Kailey (Aaron), Emily, Cole, and Daniel; his great granddaughters Brinley and Hallie; his brother Brad McMullen; and many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A service will be held later in 2026, with details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or to a charity of one’s choice.
