John Smart

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Karl Smart, born in 1937 in Vermilion, Alberta. John built a life rooted in love, family, and simple joys. In 1957, he moved to Red Deer, where he later met the love of his life, Jean Ness. They were married on October 1, 1960, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with devotion and shared memories. John was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He and Jean raised four children, Karine (Lane), Calvin, Ron (Melinda), and Laura (Sean); he was a proud grandfather to, Cindy, Stephanie, Samantha, Rebekah, Jessica, Jonah, Mackenzie, and Halle; and a great-grandfather to Nolan, Erika, Alaiyah, Marcus, Cooper, Parker, Wyatt, Cohen, and Oliver. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean; his son, Calvin; his brother, Mike Smart (Mabel); and his son-in-law, Sean. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Ed Smart (Leone); as well as many family members who will cherish his memory. John found joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially fishing and watching a good old Western movie. He was known for his quiet strength, steady presence, and deep love for his family. There are no words that can fully express how grateful and blessed we are for the care John received at College Bethany. For 16 years, he was lovingly supported and well cared for by compassionate staff who became like family. A Service to Celebrate John’s Life will be held at Cross Roads Church 38105 Range Road 275, Red Deer on Friday, May 8th, 2026 at 10:00 AM. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend and honor a life well lived. John will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
