John "Wayne" Fletcher

September 9th, 1947 - October 6th, 2024
John "Wayne" Fletcher

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Wayne on Sunday, Oct 6, 2024 in Calgary at the age of 77, with family by his side.

Wayne was born on Sept 9, 1947 and became the 4th generation on the Fletcher Farm which was homesteaded by his great grandpa in 1892. This is where he spent his entire life farming with first his dad and now his son Kevin.

Wayne was an avid 4-H member, supporter and leader, in 1998 he received his 20 year leader award. He was one of the first people to import full French Charolais cattle into Canada in the 1960’s and enjoyed telling his many stories of trips to Agribition. Wayne met Evelyn Cole in the summer of 1975 and they were married on June 12, 1976 in Calgary. Wayne brought Evelyn home to the farm where they raised their children and continued farming until his passing.

Besides farming Wayne enjoyed his weekly Friday morning coffee visits, having lunch with friends and a good bull sale. He enjoyed visiting with his neighbours and friends and anyone he ran into. Later on him and Ev travelled to different parts of the world sharing many adventures with friends. But his most loved past time was going to all of his grandchildren’s sports, 4-H events and rodeos. As much as his favourite thing to do was work he was never to busy to spend quality time with each of his grandkids. He enjoyed teaching them the ins and outs on the farm and how important hard work is and the buttons on his shirt would pop with pride every time he talked about one of them. Even in the last few days he was determined not to miss one of their events.

Wayne will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Evelyn of 48 years, his two children Kelli (Joey) Becker and Kevin (Crystal) Fletcher, and his 6 favourite people his grandchildren, Jaci, Wyatt, Ivy, Miley, Levi and Presley. As well as many nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his parents John and Ivy Fletcher, brother Bud Laveck and sister in law Enola and sister Kay and brother in law Wally Larkam.

We would like to thank all of our friends, family and neighbours for all of their help, support and meals over the last weeks, as well as all of the wonderful Drs. and nurses on Unit 36 of the Foothills hospital for going above and beyond for our family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Balzac 4-H Beef Club, or an organization of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Crossfield Community Centre on Monday, October 14, 2024 at 2:00 PM. At the request of the family, please wear casual clothing like Wayne wore everyday.

Our memories of Wayne go way back to 4-H Show & Sale when it was part of the Calgary Stampede & Wayne showed the first Charolais steer ever. Oh the fun we had during those few days
Next we were all young farmers starting out on family farms & we purchased our first Charllaia bull from Wayne, what an adventure that was starting with getting him home to Irricana
Curling bonspiels in the old Airdrie curling rink then onto the serious business of farming
Wayne was always around bull sales, auction marts, auction sales, UFA & community events & willing to chat & share his knowledge about cattle & farming
Fast forward to children & grandchildren back into 4-H now it’s our kids & grand kids
Biggest supporter & fan following their activities all over the province proud & happy to share & talk about all accomplishments
Always a cheery hello & visit wherever u chanced to meet
As u say good bye & grieve for him be proud of this generational farmer, his accomplishments & pride in all you have achieved as family & the legacy you have
Kind regards to Wayne’s family
May he RIP

Heart breaking to learn of Wayne's passing, Airdrie has lost a legend. Wayne always had time to talk and share a friendly hello and everything agriculture whenever our paths crossed. His down to earth sense of humor and hardworking commitment to cattle and his family has been passed down to his children. Kelly and Kevin, I feel your loss. I hope that as you reflect on the incredulity impact your dad had on your life, his love, and the lessons he's given you that you both find peace in this journey. You both were the apple in his eye! There is nothing better than the love of a father. With my most sincere condolences may God hold you and your family close while you navigate this grief. Sending you all a big hug!

To the Fletcher Family.
It’s with our deepest condolences of the loss of Wayne.
Wayne had a short stature, but he was larger than life itself. He always made time to have a chat whether at a branding, UFA, Ranch rodeo, or a bill sale.

First time I met Wayne was at hwy 21 Ranch rodeo, I was on Kevin’s team he walked up to me introduced himself and bought me a beer.

The hole that Wayne is leaving will be hard to fill. But the great man he is and was, that hole will be filled with the love and stories you have of him, his memory will live on.

With love

I always enjoyed running into Wayne at Old Town on Thursdays and can’t remember a time I went to UFA and didn’t see him. He seemed to be at the mailbox every time I drove by so I hope he got whatever he was waiting for!

Wayne was a great 4H Leader and community member and he will be missed.

I’m sorry for your loss!

Wayne was one of the greatest people I ever worked for and curled with. The time he hit the brakes on his truck when I was running to jump in hauling bales stands out - he hit the brakes, I hit the bumper and laid on the ground crying in pain (45 years ago).

Uncle Wayne was one of many favorite uncles I rember when I was younger and I stayed at the farm on weekends my cousin Kelli and Kevin and I would all play in the field or go In the barn to help him with raking hay for the cows and horses he taught me how to ride a horse and not to be afraid of them and how to be careful around cows and love his stories especially the one on how he lost part of his thumb he will be missed by us all love you uncle Wayne
