In Memory
Karen Mildred Karperien

Karen Mildred Karperien (née Klassen), age 66, passed away peacefully in hospital on December 29th, 2025, following a courageous and remarkable 3 year fight against squamous cell carcinoma (tongue) cancer. In her final moments, she was comforted by two of her loving sisters, and by the presence and care of many of her siblings and family members who gathered continuously in the days leading up to her passing.
Karen was born in Surrey, BC and lived in Calgary for most of her life, where she built a home rooted in faith, family, and service to others. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Alma Klassen.
Karen is survived by her husband of 39 years, John Karperien; her children, Gerard and Desirae (Linden); her cherished grandsons, Seth and Levi, who were the absolute joy of her life; and all 8 of her siblings, along with many nieces, nephews and other family members who loved her deeply.
Karen is remembered for her playfulness and humour, her kindness and strength, and her thoughtful, creative spirit. She had a deep love for caring for others, often expressed through her love of cooking and gathering people together. She was a woman of many talents and hobbies, including gardening, sewing, crafting, cutting hair, home projects, and decorating. She had a marvelous ability to do well at anything she put her hand to.
Above all else, Karen was happiest when surrounded by her family—especially when her grandsons were involved. Being a grandmother brought her immense joy and purpose, and her love for Seth and Levi was unwavering and unconditional.
Karen’s faith in Jesus Christ was central to her life and a source of strength through every season. She trusted in God’s promises and now rests in the peace and hope of eternal life. While her family mourns her loss, they find comfort in knowing she is reunited with her Heavenly Father and those who have gone before her.
A Celebration of Karen’s Life will be held at Bonavista Baptist Church on January 24th, 2026 at 2:00pm with reception to follow. The service will be live streamed for those who are unable to attend in person. Please use the following link to access the live stream:
