After a long life—abundant
in blessings given and received—Kathleen Westgarth Hatfield (née Welham) died
peacefully in her sleep just before midnight on Saturday, July 8, at the age of
92. There was nothing to indicate it was imminent; she’d had a pleasant
day and was in good spirits, looking at family photos and listening to her
favourite music before settling into her bed in long-term care at Cambridge
Manor.
Missing her are her four daughters: Barb Hatfield (Rob Coles), Kate
Hatfield-Osborne (Steve Osborne), Linda Hatfield (Rick Smith) and Sue Hatfield;
nine grandchildren and their partners and one great-grandchild: Nathan Coles,
Michael Coles (Aubrey) and Tim Coles; Jenna Osborne-Taylor (Zechariah) and
daughter Azariah, and Jacob Osborne (Rachael); Ben Smith and Sarah McArthur
(Justin); Ellen Cusano (Chris) and Matt Cusano (Darienne).
The family wishes to thank the dedicated friends and family who provided
support and comfort to her and to us over the years, especially companions
Christie Seymour and Chris Osborne. Thank you also to her physician Dr. Leslie
Chan, and to Dr. Peter Jamieson and the staff at Cambridge Manor for their
compassionate care for Kathleen over the past eighteen months.
It was Kathleen’s wish to donate her body to the University of Calgary
for medical research. Honouring her wish will delay a Celebration of Life until
later in the fall, which will also allow those family members residing in New
Zealand to attend. A notice will follow when the date for the service is set.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Meals on Wheels or Project Ploughshares would
be appreciated.

Your mom, Kathleen, was our nursing school classmate in the early 50’s. She became a good friend and we have learned that she was devoted to her families, friends, and to the causes she cherished. She was a loving daughter, caring nurse, supportive wife, and proud mother. We admired her commitment to the people and causes she treasured. Kathleen was a diligent member of her community, which she supported politically, intellectually, and spiritually. We will miss her.

May I advise Kathleen's family and friends that Project Ploughshares Calgary held its first meeting in October 1982 and was closed in 2017. It was replaced in 2017 by Ploughshares Calgary Society, a registered society in Alberta. I have served on the Board of both groups. We feel very honoured that our group has been named for possible donations, especially in these days of the Ukraine crisis.
May we offer our sincere condolences to Kathleen's extended family and friends at this time of sad loss.
