Kwesi Nyamekye Haizel

On September 25, 2025, Kwesi Nyamekye Haizel, aged 58, passed away peacefully at home in his favourite place - Akesi Farms, near Bergen, Alberta, Canada. After more than a decade of fighting an incurable neurodegenerative disease (Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3), Kwesi made the choice to end his journey with Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). He left this world on his own terms, on a warm September morning, with his wife by his side, surrounded by nature and the animal companions that brought him peace and joy.
Kwesi was born in Accra, Ghana, and educated at Mfantsipim School before completing his undergraduate degree in computer science at the University of Ghana, Legon. A work exchange at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Power Station brought him to Canada, where he went on to earn a master’s degree in computer science at the University of New Brunswick.
In 2004, continuing his IT career, Kwesi moved to Alberta where he soon met Meghan and fell in love. They married in 2007, travelled to Ghana to meet Kwesi’s parents, and kicked off a life filled with adventure, spending the first few years of their marriage travelling widely across Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and South America. Their hobbies as a couple were far-ranging including dragon boating, community gardening, supporting the arts, and volunteering for many environmental, social justice, and local community causes.
Kwesi worked as an IT professional until 2014, when he and Meghan made the decision to purchase a 53-acre farm in the foothills of Alberta. This allowed Meghan and Kwesi to pursue their dream of living closer to nature in a more sustainable way. Earlier that same year, Kwesi received his diagnosis, and despite the devastating prognosis, he decided to put all his energy, creativity and determination into building their dream - leaving a legacy at the farm he loved so deeply.
Kwesi will be remembered by friends as a generous, thoughtful and caring man whose warm and welcoming smile lit up every room. His kindness and strength will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Meghan Vesey; his mother, Devina Haizel; his brother, Kwamina Haizel; and his sister, Jennifer Snelling. He was predeceased by his father, Kwamina Haizel, in 2010.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. https://natureconservancy.ca/
