Marcene Bruntjen

Marcene Alice Bruntjen (Hunter)
July 10, 1943 to August 14, 2023

Marcene passed away peacefully August 14th in hospice at the age of 80 after a courageous 22 year battle with Huntingtons Disease. She handled this illness with determination and grace, never complaining but maintaining her spirit and dignity long after she could no longer reach us with daily conversation.

Marcene was born on July 10, 1943, in Galahad, Alberta, to John and Lois Hunter.
She grew up in Calgary, met and married Ray before they moved to the new town of Grande Cache in 1970 where they raised their family and ran several  businesses.

Marcene was a very kind and generous person.  She was full of talent that many admired and was one who never spoke ill of others.
She very much enjoyed travel, reading, crafting, gardening, curling and volunteering her time.  She was a provincially ranked trapshooter, a hobby she enjoyed with their family which allowed them to travel many places as far away as New Zealand. Marcene was also a dedicated member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was instrumental in starting a chapter in Grande Cache and continued her commitment in Calgary.

Marcene was suddenly widowed in July 1987 at the age of 44.

She moved her family, returning to Calgary in 1991 to be close to her family and in particular her mother who also lived with Huntingtons.

After Ray died she continued their love of travel exploring new places, visiting more than 30 countries usually on a cruise ship with friends.  She had a particular love for New York.  Marcene embraced every opportunity to create lasting memories.

Marcene will be lovingly remembered by her son Wade (Shanna), daughter Wendy and grandchildren Carter, Kaitlyn and Kohner.  Her siblings Melanie Hunter, Faith Wood, Joe (Susan) Hunter and sister-in-law Jean Bruntjen along with her many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Raymond Bruntjen and her parents Lois and John Hunter.

A Celebration of Life to honor Marcene Bruntjen will be held at Bearspaw Lions Club, located at 25240 Nagway Rd Calgary on Tuesday August 29th from 2-4 pm. Please join us as we come together to remember and honor a life that touched us all.
Marcene will be interred in Grande Cache with a small celebration in the spring of 2024. Please feel free to join us then.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Huntington Society of Canada. www.huntingtonsociety.ca
Your generosity will help make a difference in the lives of those affected by this debilitating disease which has effected every generation in Marcene's life.

Her spirit will forever shine bright in our hearts, reminding us to live life to the fullest and cherish the moments we share together.

Remembering Marcene and the wonderful memories I have of her. She was kind, fair and had a zest for life. She faced Huntington’s disease head on instead of waiting for the inevitable. She had great courage. I’m sorry Wade and Wendy for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
