In Memory
Maria Angelica Valdes Sepulveda
With
great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maria Angelica
Valdes Sepulveda, on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at the Rockyview Hospital,
Calgary, Alberta.
Born on April 10, 1944, in Santiago, Chile, to Sergio Enrique Valdes and Nemesia (Carmen) Sepulveda, Maria was the eldest of three children. She is survived by her younger brother, Jorge Valdes, while predeceased her brother, Sergio Valdes. Maria’s legacy lives on through her cherished children, Sergio (Johanne), Claudio, Patricia (David), and Yancy (Darrah).
As an adoring Abuelita (grandmother), she shared a special bond with her three granddaughters; Isabella, Iliana, and Madeline. Maria’s loving nature will be deeply missed by her many nieces and nephews, affectionately known as Tia. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Genie who loved to curl up and ride along on her walker.
In 1973, the coup d'état in Chile dramatically changed her life. As a member of a politically active family, she fled with her four children to Argentina, only to be displaced again by another coup the following year. In December 1975, the family found a new home in Calgary, Canada. There, she dedicated herself to building a new life for her family balancing roles as a devoted mother and grandmother while working tirelessly toward independence. Proud of her Chilean roots and her new home in Canada she embraced both identities. She enjoyed sharing Chilean heritage and cuisine with her family, especially renowned for her empanadas and traditional dishes. Often making the preparation of these meals a cherished family event. She could be found tending to her plants on the balcony and volunteering for the Manchester Community, nurturing the community garden. A passionate reader, she enjoyed exploring books on various subjects, with a particular fondness for Latin American literature.

We celebrated my wedding this weekend and could feel your spirit in the joy and beauty of the day. I wish I could still hug you and tell you how much I love you. I will always miss hearing your voice. The virtues in myself I prize are the direct influence of your thoughtfulness of being a mother. You taught me so much and I am grateful for our time in this world together.
