In Memory
Mel Morrison

It is with great sadness that Mel’s family announces his sudden, unexpected passing at home in Red Deer. Mel is lovingly remembered by his wife, Heather, of 33 years; their son, Michael; his sisters, Donna (Dan) Groves and Sandra Morrison from Brandon, Manitoba; and a large extended family.
Mel was predeceased by his father, Lloyd Morrison; his mother, Eileen (Jerome Desjardin); and his mother-in-law, Donna McDougall.
Mel was born in Souris, Manitoba, the second child
to Lloyd and Eileen Morrison. Mel spent his childhood years
there. In 1979 Mel, at 17 years young, set out on a great life adventure,
heading west to Alberta in his 1975 Camero. He landed in Calgary for
a brief time, and then moved to Red Deer, where he worked for several
years in the oilfield. In 1982, Mel found the “love of his life” Heather
McDougall. Mel and Heather both lived in Souris, a town of 2000, but connected
in Red Deer. In 1990, they were married, and in 1991, their son
Michael completed their family. In 1984 Mel
joined the Evraz team, where he worked for the next 30 years. He retired
from Evraz in 2014, but continued operating heavy equipment until his
passing. Mel loved the “great outdoors”. When Mel wasn’t fishing,
hunting, dirt biking, motorcycling, quadding or camping with family and
friends (and of course his beloved dogs), he would be busy planning
the next great adventure. The outdoors were truly Mel’s happy place and he
welcomed all to join him. Mel could fix darn near anything. He spent
many hours in his garage working on his vehicles and those of family and
friends. There was always laughter involved. Mel lived a good life
on his terms, embraced every minute and adventure, making many lifelong friends along
the way. Mel was the quintessential “shirt off my back” kind of
guy.
Mel’s family would like to thank the Red Deer
Emergency team (paramedics and police), for their respectful and
tireless treatment of Mel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
the Red Deer SPCA or Heart and Stroke Foundation.

I am sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. He was a good man, and mentor during my ipsco/EVRAZ career. I enjoyed the brief visits and stories with him around the whiskey cup. He will be missed.
