Mervin Swanson

Mervin Einar Swanson passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the Red Deer Reginal Hospital surrounded by friends. He had been in Hospital for 2 months, recovery was not to be.

He had a long list of treasured friends and was a master of keeping in touch with friends and family on a regular basis. Some of you may have received those calls.

Merv was born June 20, 1941, in Saskatoon, SK. He was adopted by Lillian and Edwin Swanson. They felt he was a special gift from God.

Edwin was a section foreman for CP Rail, and had several moves as Ed’s job was transferred.

CP Rail afforded them free rail passes and they travelled extensively throughout Canada and the US without the need for a car. Merv loved trains, he often went to visit Rose Valley, White Fox, Nipiwin, and Lloydminster reminiscing and visiting any remaining friends.

Merv served in the RCAF for 3 years, 3 months and 3 days. He loved to keep track of numbers.

He worked for Chrysler in Red Deer, AB for over 30 years

After retiring, he was a flagger and hotshot driver. A job he loved. Following his retirement, he enjoyed golfing and road trips to B.C. and Saskatchewan to visit family. He took every opportunity to go on road trips around Alberta, with a coffee and his gospel music and a friend.

At Merv’s request there will be a Celebration of Life at the Red Deer Legion, where he was a long standing member, on January 12, 2024 at 1:30 PM.  He loved Fridays at the meat draw.

Merv is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Doug Hartley of Nelson, BC, Gail Schroeder of Regina, SK, Linda Langager of Lethbridge, AB, and Glen Erikson, of London, ON.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Judy Jackson.

We want to thank the Doctors and staff of the Red Deer Hospital for their compassionate care.

In  lieu of flowers please make donations to Red Deer Regional Hospital.

I was shocked to hear of Merv's passing. Because Nov and Dec are extremely busy months for me I was not in touch with Merv. I just now wanted to touch basis with him. I tried his number and when that didn't work I GOOGLE searched his name and was shocked to see his obituary.
My condolences to the family and friends 💖🙏. I'll miss our conversations.

MERV was adopted by my Aunt Lillian & husband & we always kept in touch via calls ( Hi COUS ) he & I always joked & would update our fun times, past, & sad times on our lengthy talks. I will miss those times greatly especially his humour as he liked to pull my leg a lot.
He is in a happy place now & no more pain. Love you COUS 😢💕💕
