Patrick Oakley

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, William Patrick (Pat) Oakley, who left us on February 3rd, 2025, at the age of 69 years, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

In the face of daunting and numerous health concerns, Pat gave every last ounce of effort and willpower he had to hold on to life as long as he could. His last days saw him surrounded by those closest to him, hearing his favorite Newfoundland music, and receiving a peaceful spiritual send-off.

Pat is now reunited with those dear ones who passed before him: his father, Michael (1962); brother-in-law, Alfred; mother, Frances (1998); brother, Mike (2008); father-in-law, Hugo (2012); nephew, Jason (2012); mother-in-law, Lydia; sister, Margie (2022); nephew, Matthew (2024); and his brother Ed (2025).

Pat leaves behind to remember and celebrate his life: Cathy, his loving wife of 49 years; his son, Ryan; his daughter, Dana, and her husband, Michael; and his beloved grandchildren, Gawah and Malina. He also leaves behind his loving siblings and their partners: Patricia, Sheila (Bob), Marilyn (Alfred), and Raymond. On Cathy's side he is survived by his brother-in-law, Don (Carol); and his sisters-in-law, Margie (Gary) and Edy (Al). Pat also had many nieces and nephews who will undoubtedly remember him as a funny, playful, and mischievous jokester of an uncle.

Patrick’s first and greatest love, which endured until his last days, was for his home—St. John’s, Newfoundland. Though he may have lost his accent, he remained a Downhomer through and through. In his early adult years, Patrick joined the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, where he met lifelong friends—and, most importantly, his wife-to-be. Cathy captured his heart, and he permanently relocated to Calgary. There, Pat found his passion in woodworking. He loved to build and create, and his craftsmanship and dedication can be found in many buildings and homes throughout Calgary. He also took great joy in designing and building small furniture pieces for his close family members—treasured keepsakes that will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

One of Patrick’s most admirable qualities was his unwavering loyalty, dedication, and unrelenting care for his wife, Cathy. He was the epitome of a devoted husband and caregiver, putting her needs before his own for the majority of their marriage. Even when he was physically unable to continue, his heart remained committed to his role as her greatest support.

Pat bore a great deal of challenge throughout his life, and two of his most powerful tools for enduring hardship were his quick-witted sense of humor and his willfulness (or, as those who knew him well would say—his legendary stubbornness). He held onto both of these qualities until the very end. His playful, jokester nature has thankfully left those celebrating his life with many joyful memories.

Pat had a special connection with his fur-granddaughter, Millie. Together, they napped, walked, snuggled, ate food neither was supposed to eat, watched TV, and were beautiful companions. Pat’s gentle heart truly shone in the time he spent with her.

Patrick’s final noble act was to offer himself as a donor to the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine. In doing so, he hoped to contribute to medical advancements and the betterment of patients’ lives—a final gesture of generosity and service that humbly encapsulates the way he lived his life.

Our hearts will forever hold a special place for Patrick. We are grateful he is now at peace, soaring free of pain and worry. He stands shoulder to shoulder with those who went before him, looking out for all of us.

Fly home, Paddy—you’ve earned it.

There will be a Celebration of Patrick’s life held on June 8, 2025 at his and Cathy’s residence. In lieu of, or in addition to flowers, please feel welcome to contribute to the UCalgary Body Donation Program.
