Richard Mac Makowichuk

Rick Makowichuk of Calgary passed away at the age of 77 on August 24, 2024.

Rick was a math and physical education teacher. In addition, he coached a variety of sports over the years. Of those school sports he looked forward to fall and the football season with Cochrane High Cobras. Personal fitness was a priority for Rick. Each day he planned his activities: curling, golfing, cycling and running. He was a sports enthusiast whose two favourite teams were the Edmonton Oilers and Elks.

Rick is lovingly remembered by his wife, Brenda; daughter, Christie and her husband Keith MacAulay; son, Keith and his wife Monika; and grandchildren, Alianna and Mason. He is also lovingly remembered by his older brother, Ted and his wife Delores; and niece, Tiffany. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bruce and Dwayne.

An Open House to celebrate Rick's life will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM at the Weedon Pioneer Community Hall; 42041 Weedon Trail, Cochrane.  In honour of Rick's great love for sports, his family requests you wear your favorite jersey.

Rick was a great friend from our days in Grimshaw over fifty years ago until now. We lived together, worked together, holidayed together and played together all that time without friction of any kind. Rick was the finest gentleman we have ever known.

Brenda and I send our sincerest condolences to you Brenda, Christie and her husband, Keith and his wife and children. I too taught with Rick and know he was very health and fit conscious throughout his life. We were also neighbours for a time in Cochrane and enjoyed Brenda and Rick's company and friendship. I know he will be sorely missed by all who knew him!

I had the pleasure of knowing Rick since 1981. I taught and coached with him for twenty years. He was the best friend and colleague you could have. Rick was always positive. He made a difference at Cochrane High. The Cobras football team and track team won many championships. Rick was a major part of these successes. He was a great coach who did not look for the limelight . I will miss golfing, biking and going to football games with Rick. Bonnie and my hearts go out to Brenda and her family for their loss
