Robert (Bob) Elbertly Farr

June 28th, 1942 - November 5th, 2024
Robert (Bob) Elbertly Farr

Robert was born June 28, 1942 to Elbertly and Dorothy Farr near Calgary, Alberta. He passed away at his home by Stauffer, Alberta November 5, 2024, at the age of 82.

Bob was a simple man who loved his cows and his land. He started farming at the age of 13 after his father passed away with his brother and neighbors to make ends meet for their family and continued to farm until his passing. He passed the love of farming to his children and grandchildren.

He met Elaine Van Eaton and they were married on June 4, 1966. They worked on Fraser’s dairy farm for 2 years to save money to buy their half on the North Raven River at Stauffer. Together they worked hard to grow their farm to include their cattle herd of 600 cows, 11 quarters of land, and a family of 2 girls, Allison, and Joyce, a boy Robbie while never looking back. Bob could tell you each cow’s history back to the original herd they started with, never needing tags or a written record. He was a very proud man, always willing to lend a hand to anyone, and never asking for anything in return. He was known as the community vet and helped numerous people with any issues with their cattle. If Bob told them to call the vet, it was bad, otherwise, he could handle pulling calves, sewing up prolapse cows, c-sections, and cleaning cows. As kids, we came second to the cows.

Dad enjoyed hunting and passed that love onto his children and grandchildren, he loved coyote hunting, and any good hunting story. He also enjoyed playing cards, scratch tickets, watching rodeos, and the Calgary Flames hockey games.

Dad defied the odds the doctors gave him each time through health challenges that included a gunshot wound, 2 strokes, 2 brain bleeds, and a heart attack. He had an inner strength, stubbornness, and courage that carried him through each ordeal with no complaints, just quiet acceptance to meet each challenge head on.

Bob was able to come home to his cows, chickens, and family with help from the Lending Cupboard, Fischer’s Drugstore, Naomi for the Oxygen, Central AB Palliative Care team, Kim & her home care team, as well as Sandra, Cassandra, Louise, Dr. Chapman, Caroline Community Drugstore, and his 2 daughters that refused to take no for answer from anyone and they showed the same determination, stubbornness, and strength they inherited from him to make it happen.

Bob is lovingly remembered by his wife Elaine; his children and their spouses; his 6 grandchildren; his sisters, Mabel Dahl and Doris Butler; and numerous relatives.

Respecting his wishes, no service will be held. Bob will be laid to rest on his hill overlooking his river, the reason he bought the land in 1966. Rest well Dad, you have earned it. In memory of Bob, donations may be made to the Lending Cupboard www.lendingcupboard.ca/donation , in Red Deer, so others can have the same opportunity to remain in their own home with dignity if they so wish.

I met Bob when I was 18 through my Uncle Earl. He was a good friend of my uncles helping each other with odds and ends at each farm. He took myself and a friend under his arm to show us the proper way to hunt and be part of the woods with safety and consideration for the animals and farms that become part of the process. Everyone he introduced us to had lots of respect for Bob and this automatically passed onto us which we held as badges of honour. Whenever we were at the farm he treated us like family which ment good eats plus a little hard work. I will remember Bob fondly and I am sorry to hear of his passing.

Bob was a great neighbor and friend, on one occasion we had a cow that prolapsed and I can still see him sitting on the ground wet and determined to get it done, a true cattle man, sorry to hear of his passing !

Condolences and hugs from us. Bob was a big presence in my early years and it was always great getting together for cattle drives, branding or just games in the trailer. Glad he got to be at home where he loved to be.

What an absolute and unfailing presence Bob was in our agricultural community. It has been my pleasure and privilege to have known him and his family since their arrival in Stauffer. Rest well Bob.
