In Memory
Sandra Helmer

Sandra Faye Helmer of Airdrie, Alberta
passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Sandy is
lovingly remembered by her son, Daryl (Anita); grandchildren, Courtney and
Jordanne; as well as her sister, Corinne Knodel (Dave Jerram) and family (Tara,
Dan, and Zachary Blum). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and
relatives.
Sandy was predeceased by her husband,
Ronald; daughter, Renee; brother, Nigel (Shirley) Messmer; and her parents,
Lawrence Messmer and Norma Langford.
Sandy grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta where
she met Ron. They married in 1969 and, after being blessed with the births of
Daryl and Renee, they moved to Calgary in 1971.
For most of her life, Sandy was heavily
involved with sports associations, especially during her children’s early
years.
The family will deeply miss our wonderful
family gatherings of which Sandy was such a vital part. Her cooking was always
the hit of the day.
During her working life at SimplexGrinnell
and Legacy Fire Protection, she cherished many of her co-workers and kept in
touch with them after her retirement. She will also be sadly missed by the
softball family of umpires, who she was tasked with assigning to ball diamonds
through her retirement years.
Sandy enjoyed spending time with many of
her friends, most notably Gwen and Sandi. If she got the chance to get away,
she was either camping at McLean Creek or sneaking off to Las Vegas or Puerto
Vallarta.
When she relocated to Airdrie to be closer
to her grandchildren, she could usually be seen sitting on her porch talking to
neighbors, who heard her many stories about the umpires, her children, and
grandchildren, or discussing the weight of her cat Monkey, who was sitting on
the porch with her.
The family would like to thank the staff at
AgeCare SkyPointe for their care during her last days, as well as all the
doctors and nurses who cared for her during her illness.
Celebration of Life will be held at Grace
Baptist Church, 1009 East Lake Blvd NE, Airdrie, on Friday, June 2, 2023 from 1:00
PM to 4:00 PM.
