In Memory
Sherrie Atherton

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Sherrie Lee Atherton, who left us on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at the age of 67, surrounded by those who loved her in Red Deer, Alberta.
Born on August 20, 1958, in Windsor, Ontario, Sherrie later made Red Deer her home, where she raised her beautiful family and touched countless lives with her compassion, strength, generosity, and unwavering kindness.
Sherrie was a devoted and loving mother to Tracy (Cory), David, Tiffany (Jonathan), and her beloved son, Brandon who predeceased her and is forever missed. She was also predeceased by her cherished parents, Virginia and Edward Atherton; and her soulmate and best friend, Cy — all of whom she now joins in peace.
Her greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a proud grandmother to Cody (Breanna), Courteney, and Kyler, and to Medeux, Lukas, and Juliette. She was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to Leo and Vienna. Nothing brought her more happiness than making memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family gatherings, laughter, and time spent together were what she treasured most.
Sherrie is lovingly remembered by her sister Sally and her brother Fred, as well as her nieces and nephews, all of whom meant so much to her.
Kindness was always at the forefront of Sherrie’s heart. She believed deeply in simple, everyday acts of kindness — a warm meal, a listening ear, a helping hand and she lived that belief without hesitation. Whether caring for family, friends, neighbours, or strangers, she led with compassion. To know her was to feel supported, welcomed, and loved.
Sherrie dedicated her career and her heart to serving seniors and individuals with special needs. Her work in care homes, including her time as a Home Coordinator at Heartland Manor, was far more than a profession; it was her calling. She gave endlessly of herself and built lifelong friendships with the many women she lovingly referred to as her “sisters.” Her family is forever grateful for the love and support of those friendships.
A passionate traveler, Sherrie embraced every opportunity to explore the world. Whether near or far, she found joy in adventure and created cherished memories through her travels. She believed life was meant to be experienced fully, and she carried that spirit wherever she went.
Music and singing were woven into her soul. Her voice, her laughter, and her warmth filled every room and will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful angels at Red Deer Hospice. Though Mom’s stay was short, the compassion, dignity, and comfort they provided meant more than words can express. We are forever thankful. The family would like to give a special thank you as well to Shelly “our angel on earth” for the countless hours of love and care, and to Priscilla for your unwavering support through hospital stays and paperwork. Your kindness will never be forgotten. We also hold close to our hearts Kalla, Karin, Brenda, Beth, Gina, and the many incredible friends who became family.
Sherrie had a very special companion her beloved Bengal cat, her “soul kitty” Dolly! Who brought her endless comfort and joy.
In lieu of flowers, Sherrie would ask that you honour her memory by performing an act of kindness in her name or donating to a charity close to your heart. Causes especially meaningful to her include Red Deer Hospice, the Red Deer Food Bank, and Saving Grace Animal Rescue there are organizations that reflect her lifelong compassion for both people and animals.
In keeping with Sherrie’s spirit, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, the family will hold a celebration of her life at a later date, where stories, laughter, and love can be shared in her honour.
The family kindly asks for privacy during this difficult time and requests that personal messages be limited. If you wish to share a memory or message, you may do so by sending it to Sherrie’s phone. Her phone will be monitored, and messages will be read and responded to in time.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
Mom had a special love for The Wizard of Oz, and while we know there is truly no place like home, we find comfort in imagining her following the yellow brick road, perhaps somewhere over the rainbow — reunited with those she has longed to see again.
We love you mom.
