Shirley Sutherland

Shirley passed away at Dulcina Hospice peacefully Monday, March 27, 2023, with her children by her side.

Shirley was born to William and Alice Reid in Calgary at the General Hospital. Growing up, Shirley worked at the local Theatre and grocery store while playing many school sports. Later on, Shirley worked as a bookkeeper at Unifeed prior to marrying Bob in 1970 and moving to Carstairs. Shirley became a farm wife fulltime raising five children and supporting Bob on the farm. Outside of raising her family, Shirley liked to play cards with friends, go camping & fishing, and curling in bonspiels.

Shirley will be lovingly remembered and already missed by her sons, Rick (Debbie), Kevin (Theresa), Daniel, daughter Karen (Dan), son Robert (Tammy); grandchildren, David (Shannon), Nicole (Layne), Tyler, Holly, Cole, Laine, Paton, Jessica, Ashley; great-grandchildren, Hudson, Indiana, Morley, Clayton, Eleanor, and Waylon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Bob; father, William; mother, Alice; sisters, Audrey & Donna; brothers Bill, Ron and Bob.

Since retiring from farming, Shirley really enjoyed reading, traveling around Alberta watching all her grand children and great grand children playing hockey, baseball and any other sport she could watch them play. Shirley also enjoyed traveling to Yuma and Lake Havasu in the winters with Bob and their many friends from the Carstairs farming community. Shirley will be remembered as someone always willing to volunteer her time helping neighbors, her children’s sports teams or with the local food bank.

Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of the Carstairs Fire department, the Didsbury paramedics, Foothills hospital Neuroscience staff and all the staff of the Dulcina Hospice.

A Celebration of Life was held on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the Carstairs Community Hall.
