She attended school in Calgary and had an interest in baton twirling. After finishing courses at the U of C and SAIT in bookkeeping, typing, and simple accounting, Val worked for several corporations as a typist and office administrator and later retired from her position at MacKay LLP.

In 2003 she met Jim Grosset and they were married on 22 May 2004. This marriage brought her into the American Legion family, and she was made an Auxiliary member. Val loved cruising and they went on several cruises and enjoyed every one. They attended many Legion State and National Conventions. Val loved needle point and had many books on this. She also liked to read books and loved Sci Fi movies and Romance movies.

In 2004 she developed brain cancer. She went through chemo and radiation treatments. After this she worked and travelled until some seizures slowed that down. She lived there until she was hospitalized after having more seizures.
