Velma peacefully passed on Tuesday, June 16 at the Red Deer Hospital at the age of 86, spending her final days surrounded by family. She is reunited with the love of her life, Benjamin “Bud” Sutley after 9 years apart. Velma will be forever loved and missed by her children, Kenton (Liz), and Kimorie (Gord) Skakun; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Darren), Heather (Steve), Tyler (Garrett), Taryn (Adam), Kaitlyn (Bruce), and Kenzie; and great-grandchildren Keiden, Bentley, Brooklyn, Archer, Cassidy, Chloe, and another great-grandson coming in October.

She will be deeply missed by her surviving brothers, Warren (Laura) Barritt, and Brian (Marlene) Barritt, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Velma was predeceased by her parents, Ward and Vera Barritt; her mother-in-law, Della Sutley; her sisters, Dianna Schultz and Gail Sutley; her brothers-in-law, Norval Schultz, Pat Sutley, and Keith Sutley; her sisters-in-law, Lil Sutley and Brenda Verboon; and nephew Darwin Gillett.

She was truly meant to be a caregiver. With endless patience, compassion, and a generous heart, she devoted herself to supporting many family members through the years. Her love and kindness left a lasting impression on many.

Her family takes solace in the fact that she is now at peace and reunited with Dad/Grandpa. Their deep, eternal love for each other will carry on. Velma lived her life with the belief that “all you need is love”. Her immense love and selflessness will always be remembered by those who knew her. With her children and grandchildren at her bedside, Velma's last words were "I love you."

There will be a private interment for the family at Mirror Cemetery.

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
