Vera Fonkalsrud

Vera Fonkalsrud passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at the age of 92 years.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Carmen Marwah (Howard Chadwick) of Hemet, California and Karen Noel (Claude) of Quebec City, Quebec; her son, Allan Fonkalsrud (Colleen) of Red Deer, Alberta and her brother, Donald Horst of Tacoma, Washington.

She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Also, some very special friends Anne, Joyce and Shirley and their families respectively.

Vera was predeceased by her husband, O.V. (Red) Fonkalsrud on Feb 24, 2005 and her granddaughter, Shannon Radtke on July 31, 2024.

Vera was born the 24th of January, 1932 in Lamont, Alberta. She graduated from the University of Alberta nursing program in 1953 and remained in Edmonton until July 1969 when she moved to Red Deer with her family.

She continued nursing at the Red Deer Regional Hospital until her retirement.

She had many interests including gardening, knitting and cross-stitching and travelling with her friend, Anne.

The family would like to thank the Red Deer Regional Hospital and the Hanna Hospital for their excellent care. A special thank you to Pastor Matt from the Lutheran Church in Hanna, whose frequent visits in the last couple of weeks were so comforting to her.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Mount Calvery Lutheran Church, 18 Selkirk Blvd, Red Deer on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
