Vernon Kubbernus

Vernon Herbert Kubbernus, affectionately known as Vern, passed away in tranquility on February 22, 2024, at Bethany Senior Care Center in Airdrie, Alberta. As the first born of Herbert Henry Kubbernus and Inga Kubbernus, dedicated Alberta farmers, Vern was born on January 11, 1929, in Camrose, Alberta.

Vern, as a young man, had ambitions from an early age beyond farming; he worked as a delivery person for a local grocer, and other local jobs to earn his keep to eventually go to trades school on his own steam. Vern had a notable career in sheet metal, starting in Camrose, continuing in Edmonton, and eventually moving to Calgary. He became a senior manager at JK Campbell & Associates, known for large-scale projects in Canada and the USA. Vern made lifelong friends by blending his personal and professional life. His brothers, Leon, and Don, also worked there until retiring.

Vern and Vera created a wonderful life in Alberta. They retired and returned to their agricultural roots this time in Grindrod, BC, building a mixed farm from virgin lands to an oasis. They had cattle, chickens, fruit trees, vegetables, share cropped alfalfa, which was nearly fully self-sustainable, all a labour of love, they called Paradise Acres. Eventually, they returned to Alberta, settling in Airdrie to be near their three sons, Kim Alan (Joanne) of Didsbury, Robert James (Becky) and John Andrew (Sherrie) of Airdrie; Vern’s grandchildren, Christopher, Keenan, Talia, Jackson, Mason, Emerson, Aiva, Aidyn, James and Ben; along with great-grandchildren Quincy, Zoe, Evander, Griffon & Baisy, brought immense joy and laughter into his life, cherishing him as a playful, humorous, and incredibly happy grandfather.

Vern lived a life of unwavering faith, honesty, dedication, and humility. He was always there for his family, church, work, and community. Vern made countless enduring friendships and was loved by all who knew him. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and loyalty. Though he will be missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

He was preceded to heaven by his mother and father, aunts and uncles, and his beloved wife, Vera Elaine Kubbernus (Very Vera) who was the love of his life for 64 years, leaving a void that he deeply felt. He leaves behind a cherished family including his brother, Leon (Kay) Kubbernus, of Calgary, AB and sister, Lorna (Doug) Harrison, of Sherwood Park, AB. Vern was also preceded in death by his brothers; Virgil Kubbernus, survived by wife Betty residing in Edson, AB and Don Kubbernus, survived by his wife Solveig of Cochrane, AB.

Our family sends our deepest gratitude to the loving and caring staff at Bethany Care Center, Airdrie where Dad created such a bond of friendship with the staff and volunteers. As many said Vern was just special in his own way “there was no one like him” they loved him dearly for his humor and way of being present with them.
